Center Goals:

1) A center that defines the next wave of documentary filmmaking through creation, discussion, and scholarship.
2)A center that fosters innovation, impact, and preservation of groundbreaking documentary projects.
3) A center to further the study of new models and new concepts in documentary production and distribution utilizing the latest theories, technologies, and applications in media today, many of which were developed and defined at MIT. These include participatory (collaborative) production, mobile storytelling, transmedia, social media, location based media, ARG's, games, database and data visualization technologies, mapping, and experience design.
4) A center to foster the next generation of filmmakers both nationwide and within local communities . The center will turn out filmmakers who are schooled in new technologies as well as the old; who know what documentaries came before them as well as what lies ahead; who know how to use this knowledge for effective storytelling.
5) A center that explores and defines effective models for social change.

Center Research questions:

What are the social protocols to encourage both multiple documentaries and accretive and increasingly developed documentaries.

How do you balance the role of the professional documentary maker with the documentary-producing public, that is, the master-narrative with the many competing individual narratives that always abound but are rarely voiced? We very much want to enable the latter, but to also find an appropriate place for the former.

How do new forms of documentary storytelling and distribution create social change? How do we assess impact?
How do professional storytellers work with the people whose story they are telling? How do they enable the audience to become part of the story creation?
How does the storyteller curate the collective stories into a cohesive whole when beginning, middle and end are radically changed?
How does the community ensure that they are active participants in their own narrative?
How do they work as a community to tell their story?
How do location based technologies enable and change storytelling?
How do you tell community based stories that are also networked?

Buzzwords:
curation, location based, digital narratives (how is documentary defined?)
